A quiet river province where the Mekong runs for about 140 km from north to south. Kratie is home to the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, wide sand islands, old wooden pagodas and a provincial town lined with French colonial buildings and red-flowered riverside trees.

Most sights sit on the east bank of the Mekong, on the old road running north toward Sambor. Distances are approximate road kilometres from the town riverfront.

The "100-Pillar Pagoda" in Sambor District is an important pilgrimage site for people in Kratie, known for its long history and the many columns that give it its name.
The best place in Cambodia to see the endangered Irrawaddy (Mekong) dolphins in a deep river pool. Visitors go out by longboat or on a kayak trip. Nearby, the Kampi rapids and seasonal sand islands are a favourite local picnic spot at weekends.
A hilltop pagoda with meditation halls and wide views over the Mekong and forest. Climb the steps in the late afternoon for the light over the river.
A long, peaceful sand island facing the town, reached by a short public ferry. Rent a bicycle and ride the loop past pomelo gardens and wooden village houses, or stay overnight in a community homestay.
Walk the riverside promenade past the central market and colonial shophouses, visit the old Wat Roka Kandal pagoda at the edge of town, and stay for one of the best sunsets on the Mekong.

The dry season is the most comfortable. Dolphins gather in the deep pools from about November to March, and sand islands appear as the river drops.
Buses and minivans run daily from Phnom Penh, and private taxis are also available. Inside the province, tuk-tuks and rented motorbikes or bicycles are the easiest way to reach Kampi and Phnom Sambok.
Two to three days covers the dolphins, Koh Trong and the hill pagodas. Add a day for Sambor or a homestay on the island.

The Provincial Department of Planning is the Ministry of Planning's office in Kratie. It supports the provincial, district and commune administrations to prepare development plans, collects and manages social and economic statistics, and helps take part in national censuses and surveys.
Its roles are set out in Ministry of Planning Prakas No. 0012 MOP (2023) on the organization and functioning of the capital and provincial planning departments.

Give technical support for commune database (CDB) data collection and the sub-national project database (SPD).
Take part in national data collection, surveys and the population census in Kratie.
